State and Federal Legislation for Alyssa's Law

September 20, 2021 - Cary NC -  In a code red, every second counts. Alyssa's Law was passed in New Jersey in 2019 and requires public K-12 schools to be equipped with a panic button linked to local law enforcement. In addition, as the 2021-2022 school year starts, schools in Florida must also comply with Alyssa's law by having an alert system in place in case of a life-threatening emergency.    The Law, named after 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff, who lost her life in the Stoneman Douglas School shooting is rapidly gaining legal momentum.  The Law requires all public elementary and secondary schools to install either silent panic alarms or alternative emergency mechanisms approved by The Department of Education.

Several other states have introduced similar legislation, including Arizona, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The ALYSSA Act is bipartisan federal legislation to require silent panic alarms in all schools to immediately alert law enforcement of an active shooter situation. The bill will also increase investment in more well-trained School Resource Officers, to help protect students and faculty.  To find out more at the state level and to sign the national petition, go to
